Aperture: Hart Family

It's officially been three years since I came up with Quinn!! What did I do with my life before lol I wanted to take today to talk a little bit about her family, which influenced her character design from the beginning. Quinn's family means a lot to both her and the story as a whole, and Aperture wouldn't be the same without them.

I'm also going to talk more about the magical aspect of the characters, since that's something I didn't cover in the post for the quartet. (That may be another post coming up in the future.)

This is really image-heavy, so I'm placing it underneath a cut. Click through for more!

From the beginning, Aperture was made up of story ideas I'd gathered from daydreaming in class or from the books I'd read / cartoons I'd watched. (Most specifically Danny Phantom and Rise of the Guardians.) I really liked the concept of everyday magic, especially magic was as varied as humans are and that is kept pretty hush-hush from the "normal" people.

Not that many people in Aperture can be considered "normal" lol. I kind of took the theme and ran with it, and I can count on one hand the amount of prominent characters that aren't aware of what's going on or don't have any kind of magic themselves.

Quinn and her siblings weren't supposed to have any magic, and then it turned into just Quinn having it, and then I was like "... well why wouldn't the other kids have it, too?" and voila. Here we are. It's now become that their magic is inherited from their dad's side of the family, who just assumed their uncanny proficiency with crafting or languages was sheer luck.

Until the kids discovered their abilities, at least.

So here we go!
Monica
actress Marleen Lohse (source)
birthday: 1/9/1994

As the oldest kid, she feels responsible for the other idiots kids in the family. She wants to be a nurse after seeing Nate's grandmother, Rachel, at work in the school nurses' office and after a couple too many times trying to patch her siblings up. She's studying at local colleges and has a job in a pediatrician's office (thanks to Rachel).

Her ability is being able to diagnose other peoples' injuries, either finding out their source or how to treat them. It relies a lot on what she's learned in school so far and she can't source any injuries that were caused by magic. Rachel and some of her co-workers know about this and they try to use it as much as they can to help the kids that they treat without revealing it's magic.

Cole
model Peter Carlson (source)
birthday: 3/5/96

Cole went through a big anime phase in middle school (though, really, who doesn't). He's become a little bit less of a nerd by the end of high school, though he does still do group cosplays with his friends. He and Nate stayed friends even after Quinn and Nate stopped talking to each other, which causes some chaos when Nate moves back to their town. He also just likes to pick on Quinn in general and can be kind of reckless.

His ability is in regards to making things. It's the least defined out of all the kids, but he usually applies it to food and to cosplay. Monica is known to be a terrible cook, so he picked up the slack when their mom went back to work and actually enjoyed cooking. The cosplays he makes sometimes pick up too much magic, especially if they're of a character with magic of their own.

Quinn
actress Molly Quinn (source)
birthday: 6/21/97

Quinn actually goes by her middle name, stemming from a feud she and Nate had for a while in elementary school. Her main hobby is killing time on the internet and watching kids' cartoons. She's especially sarcastic in relation to the rest of her siblings and tends to come off very blunt at times. She's not all that social but managed to become internet friends with someone Nate went to school with in California, completely by coincidence, as well as Fel and Sol.

Her ability is to sense magic around her. Cole calls it her radar and it drives her crazy. She's usually able to tell people apart by how their magic feels and can sense them up to a certain distance away. Cole has learned that her ability is pretty dependent on her senses of sight and hearing and can be misled.

Wyatt
actor Asa Butterfield (source)
birthday: 9/30/2001

Wyatt generally manages to fly under the radar better than Quinn since he stays out of trouble. (Meaning he does stuff the first time he's told, instead of the third or fourth.) He reads a lot, both in books and online, and has a pretty good knowledge base but tends to stay pretty quiet in conversations.

His ability is directing people's attention away from him, which developed after having a severe allergic reaction to seafood as a kid and a hatred of all the resulting overprotection. His was the first that they actually discovered was magic and related to a single event. Quinn is the only one that can actively tell when he's using his ability; the others can't tell until they notice he doesn't seem there anymore. (Quinn generally doesn't rat him out about using it to stay out of a conversation.)

Lucy
my cousin Hope (stolen from my aunt's Facebook lol)
birthday: 12/12/07

(My cousin doesn't look exactly like Lucy, but she was like 80% of the inspiration for her, and all of the pictures I'd saved on Pinterest had broken sources. That's also me in the blue hoodie btw) Lucy is the baby of the family by a considerable amount and is both spoiled and generally left out of the loop at the same time. The others tend to talk down to her in regards to magic and she hates it. She's definitely the most energetic and least jaded kid.

She doesn't have an ability when Aperture starts, but it develops in Quinn's senior year into age manipulation. She's able to change her appearance and behavior up to about Cole's age. She doesn't have control of it at first and she's only able to change her age when Quinn's ability acts up with hers.

Stephen Chase
actor Charlie Rowe (source)
birthday: 10/17/1982

So, he's not actually one of their siblings. He was the younger brother of the kids' dad's best friend and lived in the house the Harts now own. He was bassist in a band from the high school and was only two months into his senior year when he died from a severe allergic reaction. For some reason the Harts don't really know, Stephen became a ghost and went unnoticed for a couple years.

Quinn and Wyatt were the first to interact with him; Monica, Cole, and their parents didn't believe the two for a while. Stephen was the one to recognize Wyatt's allergic reaction symptoms and alert their dad, and he's basically become an older brother to the kids. He's gained more of a physical form around them but can't interact with a lot of the house when around people who don't know he's there.

So anyway, in writing these out I realized how cruel I am sometimes to these kids. Whoops. These little bios were pretty hard to write in terms of not revealing too much. There's a lot more to their stories that isn't discovered by them until later into Aperture. (I only revealed Lucy's ability to keep her profile consistent.)

I couldn't find anywhere else to put this info, so I'm just sticking it here: the kids' mom is vehemently against believing in magic. The kids learn that she prevents Stephen from being tangible and interrupts the more visible aspects of their abilities. Quinn thinks it's hilarious that she ended up in a family surrounded by magic, and that somehow in 20 years she's never managed to catch on.

Also, random fun fact: I picked all of their names off a list I'd made of randomly-generated ones. I filled an entire sheet with names shortly before I created Quinn, and after picking her name off the list, I decided that all of her siblings' names should come from it, too. behindthename.com is my favorite and I owe a lot to it.

Thanks so much for reading this! I've been itching to do more character bios since the one I posted for the quartet right before my birthday last year. Hopefully soon I'll do some of the extended quartet and elaborate more on the other three's involvement with magic.
